We aim to work primarily with the Irish community, raising awareness of health issues, cultural and social events. Working in partnership with other ethnic groups to promote cohesion within the borough of Sandwell.

Our organisation was formed following a health survey commissioned by the Primary Care Trust in 1999. The results of this survey raised alarm at some of the health inequalities that were found within the Irish Community. These finding were of great concern to the Primary Care Trust (PCT), the Irish and other community groups so the Irish Community Association was formed with a remit to raise awareness of the health concerns that had been identified. March 2002 saw the launch of the organisation which initially ran on a voluntary basis. The group has grown from strength to strength and the need to move forward to the next level became apparent. We now have premises in order to deliver the outcomes identified by an outreach worker over recent years. This work has been achieved by holding different events, both social and health orientated. Feedback from these events has given us the evidence to target the professional bodies and community organisations and help us to address some of the inequalities.

We now have two paid members of staff - a Resource Centre Manager and a Community Health Development Officer (funded by the PCT).

Currently we are undertaking research through a Health Screening Event in partnership with Dr. Jeetesh Patel which will help us to gather evidence about Haemochromatosis (Celtic Gene), a genetic blood disorder which is believed to be a major contributing factor to the health problems within the Irish community.
